Make Your Own Inexpensive Energy Efficent Ubuntu Linux File Server: Part 3/4 – Installing Ubuntu Linux

You can choose to have your home directory encrypted. I chose not to as I was having lots of issues getting this to work and wanted to eliminate as many problem sources as possible. It may work with encryption, I don’t know. For me, it wasn’t worth the hassle.

Choose encryption of home directory

I don’t want to have to do security updates, so I choose to let it update security updates automatically.

Here you can see the software packages to have it install. You will for sure have to have all of these on there. Not sure about DNS, but I figured it wouldn’t hurt. You could probably go ahead and have it install a mail server so that you can be informed of problems with your RAID, but I chose not to do it at this time.

  • Basic Ubuntu Server
  • DNS Server
  • LAMP server
  • OpenSSH Server
  • Print Server
  • Samba file server

The next screen asks about setting clocks to UTC and I chose yes.
